Nokia announces new Windows Phones

It's finally official. Nokia Windows Phones are upon us and the company announced the first two handsets which will lead their charge against the iPhone and Android dominance. The first to be introduced was the Nokia Lumia 800, followed by the Nokia Lumia 710.

RIM announces BBX OS for smartphones and tablets

RIM's annual DevCon is underway and during the keynote speech by co-CEO Mike Lazaridis a new operating system named BBX was announced.

BBX is the name given to RIM's QNX based OS and will power future phones and tablets under the BlackBerry brand. Since BBX uses the same source code as BlackBerry OS 6 and OS 7, HTML apps that were built for the older operating systems will work on BBX. The UI is said to be based on the Cascades framework developed by the Amazing Tribe.

BUILD attendees receive Windows 8 tablets

It is a regular practice that attendees of developer conferences get some perks, and it is no different at Microsoft Conferences. The recently held BUILD conference got more than just the preview version of Windows 8. They also received a Windows 8 tablet from Samsung.

It is no doubt that any successful platform requires a devoted developer community. Microsoft acknowledges the attending developers by giving away 5000 tablets running the Developer Preview of Windows 8. Microsoft is hoping of course that the outcome of the Samsung Tablet will be innovative new apps for their platform.

Toshiba Excite spotted at IFA 2011

The Toshiba Thrive is a tablet known for it's versatility by offering multiple options for connectivity and the company is ready to offer the same in a much smaller package. The Toshiba (AT200) Excite offers microUSB, microSD, microHDMI, a user changeable battery and interchangeable back covers while staying slimmer than both the Apple iPad 2 and the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and currently holds the crown of thinnest tablet at only 7.7mm.

Nokia N9 announced

Nokia has announced it's first Meego based handset the Nokia N9, during Nokia Connection 2011 in Singapore. The Linux based Meego operating system which was jointly developed by Intel and Nokia and features a new user interface while uses a lot of gesture based navigation.

The homescreen has three panels, which you can navigate with swipes. The first contains all the installed applications, the second has events which include notifications and messages and the third panel shows all the running applications.

WWDC 2011 - Apple iOS 5

Apple introduced the next iteration to their mobile operating system during the WWDC 2011 which was held in  San Francisco. Apple's iOS 5 will feature over 200 new features.

WWDC 2011 - Mac OS X Lion

Apple introduced the next iteration of OS X back in October and demonstrated the many popular features of iOS which would make it's way to Apple's desktop platform.

During the WWDC 2011 Apple re-introduced the progress they have made with OS X Lion and promised to have it available July, for download from the Mac App Store for $29.99.

WWDC 2011 - iCloud

Apple intrdocued the world to their iCloud service during WWDC 2011. The iCloud service is seamlessly integrated into your apps with iOS 5. You can access your data from all your iOS devices, Mac and PC. You can get access to your photos, music and apps. Your email, calendar and contacts will stay synced between all your devices.

WWDC 2011 - OS X Lion, iOS 5, iCloud and more...

The WWDC 2011 keynote has just concluded, and Steve Jobs was present to unveil some exciting things to come from Apple:

OS X 10.7 Lion is the 8th iteration of OS X and brings the best features of iOS to laptops and desktop Macs. Lion will have over 3000 new features and will be available exclusively through the Mac App Store for only $30. OS X 10.7 features include full screen apps, improved email and safari browser, Air drop file sharing, improved auto save, Mission Control and the integrated Mac App Store.

iOS 5, iCloud, OS X Lion to be unveiled during WWDC 2011

Apple has confirmed in a press release that alongside the release of Mac OS X (10.7) Lion and iOS 5, a cloud based service iCloud will also be unveiled during the WWDC 2011. While no news of a new iPhone model has surfaced we can never be sure until Steve Jobs' keynote concludes.

Intel introduces Ultrabooks

Today Intel announced a new class in laptops called UltraBooks at Computex 2011. These new breed of laptops which are meant to directly compete with Apple's MacBook Air will offer longer battery life, are less than an inch thick and priced under $1000. Intel is confident that by 2012 the Ultrabook will make up 40 percent of the consumer laptops sold worldwide.

Asus teases upcoming devices

Asus looks to be prepping up some device releases for Computex 2011, in Taipei. Their Facebook page features a sleek device with the title "Break the Rules: Pad or Phone". With the Asus folks having quite a line up of tablets which they demonstrated during CES 2011, I wouldn't be surprised if we are treated to a sleek new smartphone.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 (Google I/O Special Edition) - Unboxing Videos

Attendees of the Google I/O received a special edition Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 which is not due for public release for another month. The device features a 10.1 inch touch display, up to 64GB of internal storage which can be expanded through microSD, a 3.2 megapixel camera, a secondary camera for video calls and is powered by a 1 GHz NVidia Tegra 2 dual-core processor with 1GB of RAM.

Google I/O 2011 - Day 02

  • Chrome Update - Google has 160 Million active users as of today, which is a great improvement since it's 70 Million recorded at last year's Google I/O
  • In App Payment for WebApps - Chrome Web Apps allow developers to have in app payments for web apps with a single line of code.
  • Angry Birds for Chrome - A special version of Angry Birds has been launched for the Google Chrome Web Store. If you dont use chrome, you can still access it here.
  • Chromebooks - Google will release two ChromeBooks starting June 15, from Acer and Samsung, for consumers, businesses and schools in 7 countries.
  • Chromebook Subscriptions - Chromebooks will be available for a monthly subscription of $28 for businesses and $20 for schools.
  • Google Tasks API - This API allows developers to develop apps which interact directly with Google tasks.
  • Java Port for ROS - rosjava released, which is a pure Java port of ROS which enables development of Android apps for robotics.
  • In-App payment in Chrome Web Store previewed.
Google I/O attendees were promised Chromebooks which they will receive on June 15 after the official launch.
