With the rebranding of SkyDrive to OneDrive, Microsoft recently gave away 100GB of free storage to 100,000 newly registered users. This promotion ended within minutes, but it looks like Microsoft wants to give you another chance to get 100GB of OneDrive storage.

SkyDrive will soon become OneDrive to save all your online content

Microsoft was taken to court earlier last year by British Sky Broadcasting Group for using the name "SkyDrive" claiming that it infringed on the "Sky" trademark. (SkyDrive is the place where all Windows Phones back up in the cloud, and it also has apps for Android, iOS, and the web.) Because of this litigation, Microsoft is changing the name of SkyDrive to OneDrive.

Sony 'my Xperia' launching globally

Apple and Microsoft offer services to find your missing smartphones, while Android does not. Sony feels that there Xperia owners deserve better, so they piloted the 'my Xperia' service earlier this year and are now ready to launch the service worldwide based on their feedback from early users.

Sony my Xperia will allows Sony Xperia owners to use the website to set your missing device to sound an alarm, even if it is set to silent. You can also lock down your device or wipe all the data on it if it has been stolen.

If you are a student attending college in the U.S. and have a valid (.edu) school email address you are eligible to receive 3GB of extra free storage for your Microsoft SkyDrive cloud storage account. SkyDrive offers 7GB of free storage for your files and a great alternative to services like Google Drive, iCloud or Dropbox. SkyDrive works very well with those who own a Windows Phone or a Windows 8 device.

SkyDrive update brings faster uploads and timeline feature for photos

Microsoft's SkyDrive cloud storage service offers 7GB  of free storage which can be synced between all your Windows computers, tablets and smartphones. Today Microsoft is rolling out some interesting updates to SkyDrive with some improvements to how photos are handled.

The company has found that people mostly store their photos on SkyDrive and have thus made it easier upload and view your photos with these new enhancements.

Box offers 25GB of free storage through a special promo

Box is offering five-times the normal allocation of free storage for personal use through a special promotion which seems to be continuing past its Super Bowl launch. In order to get the 25GB of storage you need tow have a new account and it has to be for personal use. There is also a 250MB file size limit which is same limit on free users.

Google has made some changes to its Google Drive service which allows the content of HTML, JavaScript and CSS files to be shared to the public. Previously it has been possible to store web related files on Google Drive but you didn't have the option to share their contents as a website with others. Now this is possible with the Public on the web setting which allows HTML and CSS files and folders to be hosted on Google Drive as websites.

Microsoft Office 2013 and Office 365 officially launched

Microsoft has officially launched Office 2013 and Office 365 which are available for purchase in retail stores across 162 countries and on the Office website. It looks like Microsoft is choosing a subscription package option for their cloud based Office 365 offering. But it is not going to be easy to be easy to convince users to pay a monthly or annual fee for the latest version of Office and Microsoft is going to have to work hard at it.

LG offers 50GB of free cloud storage for their Android devices

LG Android smartphone users in the U.S. can redeem an offer for 50GB of free cloud storage on their devices. The storage comes courtesy of Box.com and you can hold onto the free storage for life for owning an Android phone from LG.

In order to be eligible for the offer, you will have to live in the U.S. and your device has to run Android 2.1 or later and have a HVGA (320 x 480 pixels) resolution. Also the offer is available to users who register before December 31 2012 if they don’t already have a Box account.

Sony MyXperia - Company's cloud storage service

It looks like manufactures are trying to introduce their own cloud based services to compete with the offerings from the operating systems and it looks like Sony may be readying one of their own. This news comes based on the company’s recent trademark application for the term “MyXperia”.

Sony trademarks 'My Xperia' for new cloud storage service?

Sony Mobile maybe getting ready to make its presence felt in the cloud. The company has recently trademarked the term 'My Xperia' as a service which will be made available for the company's Xperia devices.

According to the trademark application My Xperia will be a service or an app which will grant the user the ability to upload and download content from... somewhere, presumably the cloud.

With more and more companies offering some kind of cloud based service, it isnt surprising that Sony wants to join in. Check out the detailed trademark application for My Xperia below.

Google Storage to combine Google Drive and Picasa


Google has just reported that they will be combining the the storage on Google Drive with their Photo service Picasa. Currently users have a combination of 6GB (5GB on Google Drive + 1GB on Picasa) which will be reduced to just 5GB.
