U.S. Cellular decides to sell the Apple iPhone

U.S. Cellular is the sixth largest carrier in the nation, so it is a little surprising that the one of the most popular smartphone in the US is not offered to its customers.About a year and a half ago the carrier had the opportunity to carry the iPhone, but decided not to as it was too expensive. Since then, the carrier has lost 268,000 or 5% of its post-paid contract customers.

The Apple iPhone is expensive for carriers because of the subsidy that each postpaid carrier pays to keep 16GB version of the Apple iPhone 5 priced at $199.99 in the U.S. The carrier's CEO Mary Dillon is hoping that by offering the most popular smartphone in the U.S., the mobile operator can reverse the decline in contract subscribers.
