Flame with Firefox OS now available to developers

is a Firefox OS reference device from Alcatel, which is meant to help developers test out their content on Firefox OS and make sure the apps they write will work on the OS. The device is now being shipped out to Mozillians (individuals or groups that were involved in the Mozilla Project) or developers that bought the device when it went up for pre-orders in May.

Firefox phones costing $50 to launch in India

Last year we saw Firefox OS powered smartphones launched in Europe and Latin America. Since it was only able to cooperate with as many as two carriers in each country, the platform has only managed to sell an underwhelming one million devices. Now Mozilla wants to expand their Firefox OS platform to the Indian market.

ZTE Open C with Firefox OS now officially available through eBay

The ZTE Open C which was first announced at MWC 2014 in February is now available for purchase through eBay. This affordable smartphone, which is powered by Mozilla's Firefox OS is available through ZTE's eBay stores in US, UK, Germany, Russia, and "more than 20 other European countries".

Mozilla plans to bring a $25 Firefox OS phone

Smartphones have gotten cheaper and faster, but it’s still hard to find many smartphones under $100, and there are almost none under $50. Mozilla, the company behind the popular browser and the Firefox OS, wants to change this and has signed a partnership to make the world’s cheapest smartphone, a $25 Firefox OS smartphone.

Along with a new Android range, the Chinese TCL-owned subsidiary is introducing four new, Firefox OS-powered devices. Three of them are mid-level smartphones, and the first tablet with to run Firefox OS.

LG Fireweb announced as company's first Firefox OS device

Firefox OS by Mozilla is a standalone platform based on the philosophy of open web, meaning no proprietary tech or software. The platform represents one of very few alternative mobile OSes that are actually commercially available in some parts of the world. LG has come forward to support this platform alongside manufacturers like Alcatel, Huawei and ZTE and have released their first device in the form of the LG Fireweb.

Alcatel OneTouch Fire officially announced with Firefox OS, coming this summer

The Alcatel OneTouch Fire has been officially announced and is set for its first commercial launch in Europe and Latin America this summer. The One Touch Fire is an entry level Firefox OS smartphone which features a 3.5 inch display with a 320 by 480 pixel resolution, a 3.2 megapixel camera without flash which is capable of capturing VGA quality video at 30fps, FM radio, 512MB of internal storage which can be expanded through microSD and is powered by a 1GHz MSM 7227 processor. While these may not match some of the top smartphones, the likely affordability should be warmly welcome in emerging markets.

The HTC HD2 was first launched back in 2009, with Windows Mobile and carried a 4.3 inch screen that was exceptionally large for the time. Over the last four years, developers have been able to hack the phone to run on Android 4.1, Windows Phone 8, Ubuntu and even Windows RT, despite the outdated specs inside the handset, Now, developers have managed to port Firefox OS onto the device

Sony Xperia E receives experimental Firefox OS ROM

Sony has announced that they are considering launching a Firefox OS phone next year and have released an experimental ROM for the Sony Xperia E, so that app developers and enthusiasts can test the platform and give Sony some valuable feedback. The reason behind choosing the Xperia E as the test subject is simple.

Firefox OS has been built with low end smartphones in mind and the Xperia E has the same specs offered by the ZTE Open and the Alcatel One Touch Fire, the first two Firefox OS devices which were announced at the MWC.

Alcatel One Touch Fire - Hands On Video


The Alcatel One Touch Fire is one of first lineup of smartphones to run Firefox OS. The platform is definitely tailored to first-time smartphone owners and offers a refreshing alternative to the back and forth battle between Android and iOS.

The handset doesn’t boast excessive hardware with a 3.5 inch  touch display, 512 MB of internal storage which can be expanded through microSD, a 3.2 megapixel camera and is powered by a 1 GHz processor with 256 MB of RAM. But it has the power it needs to run the HMTL-5 based Firefox OS with ease.

The interface makes it easy to quickly locate contacts, apps, texts or media and you will have access to the Firefox browser which is an extension to its desktop counterpart and even includes its extensions you know and love.

Mozilla Firefox OS - Video Demo

Firefox-OSMozilla’s CEO Gary Kovacs recently revealed that their HTML5 based Firefox OS devices will be available in the U.S. sometime in 2014. This year it will be arriving in countries like Brazil, Colombia, Hungary, Mexico, Montenegro, Poland, Serbia, Spain and Venezuela with additional markets expected to be announced soon. The devices will be manufactured by LG, Huawei, ZTE and Alcatel and will be powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon processors.

Mozilla has released a video which demonstrates some of the interesting features of Firefox OS, including the ability to search for movies on the device, which displays a list of movie-related apps like Fandango and IMDB.

Mozilla CEO expects Firefox OS devices for US by 2014

Firefox-OSMozilla CEO Gary Kovacs recently revealed his company’s partnership with LG and other prominent device manufacturers, to introduce Firefox OS based devices. During a Q&A session he also revealed that the company expected the first Firefox devices to come to the United States “somewhere in the 2014 time-frame”.

Mozilla has announced that they are partnering with four device manufacturers – LG, Huawei, ZTE, Alcatel to build devices based on their HTML5 based Firefox OS. The have also reported that 18 carriers across the globe have confirmed that they will offer these devices. It has also been confirmed that Firefox OS will feature apps like Facebook, Twitter and games like Cut the Rope.

The handsets are expected to be entry level devices which will bridge the gap between traditional smartphones with native apps and feature phones.

Mozilla announces Firefox OS Developer Preview Phone


Mozilla has been trying its best to get developer attention for their new Firefox OS, but there has been a notable lack of hardware until now. Developers have had to rely on loading the mobile operating system onto their own devices in order to test their apps and services effectively. In an attempt to take things forward Mozilla has announced the launch of two developer preview devices which will have Firefox OS preloaded on them.

Nokia N9 receives Firefox OS port


The proves yet again to be a very versatile device. A couple of days ago we reported that the N9 was running a port of Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and now it has been spotted Mozilla’s Firefox OS.

Firefox OS aims to be a fully free and open HTML5 based mobile OS, based on Linux and Gecko. Nightly builds of the operating system are currently available for testing and a developer has managed to install it on his N9.

Mozilla's Firefox OS revealed

Firefox OS which was previously code-named Boot to Gecko has stepped into the limelight to show off its HTML-5 based UI. Mozilla hopes to make Firefox OS a totally open and free mobile operating system.

Since the system will run HTML-5 based web apps, developers can code apps which can run on any HTML5 based web browser.

While we have been getting little glimpses of Mozilla's Firefox OS up until now, we can now take a look at the key features of the mobile OS in the following screenshots.
