Mozilla has been trying its best to get developer attention for their new Firefox OS, but there has been a notable lack of hardware until now. Developers have had to rely on loading the mobile operating system onto their own devices in order to test their apps and services effectively. In an attempt to take things forward Mozilla has announced the launch of two developer preview devices which will have Firefox OS preloaded on them.
The devices have been designed and manufactured as part of a collaboration between Geeksphone and the Telefonica mobile network and are named Keon and Peak. These two devices will allow developers to test their apps on physical devices instead of having to rely on simulations or fiddling with their own hardware.
The Keon is the more affordable of the two with a 3.5 inch touch HVGA display, 4GB of internal storage which can be expanded through microSD, a 3 megapixel camera and is powered by a 1GHz Snapdragon processor.
Meanwhile the Peak features a 4.3 inch display with a qHD resolution, 4GB of internal storage which can be expanded through microSD, an 8 megapixel rear camera, a secondary 2 megapixel camera for video calls and is powered by a 1.2GHz dual-core processor with 512MB of RAM.
Mozilla hopes to make sure that Firefox OS is not only open but readily accessible to anyone who wants to use it or adopt it on their hardware. It wont be too long before we start to see Firefox OS powered devices arrive for consumers as well. These devices are expected to be made available to developers by February and will hopefully result in a great collection of apps making their way to the platform in time for its inevitable public launch.
