Mozilla has announced that they are partnering with four device manufacturers – LG, Huawei, ZTE, Alcatel to build devices based on their HTML5 based Firefox OS. The have also reported that 18 carriers across the globe have confirmed that they will offer these devices. It has also been confirmed that Firefox OS will feature apps like Facebook, Twitter and games like Cut the Rope.
The handsets are expected to be entry level devices which will bridge the gap between traditional smartphones with native apps and feature phones.
The greatest advantage of the platform is that it has the potential to make the whole web its ecosystem, much like Chrome apps. The Firefox OS platform will also bring games from Disney Mobile and EA games and we can expect apps like Nokia HERE maps and SoundCloud to also be offered.
The entry level smartphone market is still open to options. Windows Phones aren't capable of offering low end hardware and while Android devices are offered at reasonable prices we don’t think they are capable to offer users the level of experience they should. This is where Firefox OS can make that difference and we will be interested to see how developers will embrace the open platform.
