Are you still holding onto a webOS device running webOS 2.1 or later? Then you will be interested to know that there maybe an update waiting for you. This is a mandatory system update which has been available for these devices since early June.
Basically what it does is update a certificate used by webOS to access cloud services like backup/restore and the App Catalog. The current certificate is set to expire on June 23.

LG to acquire webOS from HP
LG has announced that they will be acquiring webOS from HP in an attempt to use the operating system to power their new smart TV platform. The acquisition will include the source code, all related documentation, engineers, related web domains and all the patents that HP acquired when their purchased the platform from Palm.
It will be disappointing to know that this may be the end of one of the most innovative mobile operating systems, which had the potential to overtake Apple had it been used properly.

Open webOS ported to the Google Nexus 7
We previously saw Open webOS 1.0 ported to the Google Galaxy Nexus almost immediately after the first stable build of the operating system was released. Since then the operating system has been ported to a variety of different devices. The pace of the development has been quite impressive when you consider the platform has only been around for three months.
Most recently the developers have managed to port Open webOS to the Google Nexus 7. What's interesting is that the developer behind this port has taken only two weeks to port it from the Galaxy Nexus version and that the port is able to run without being connected to a PC. You are however required to tether your device to boot it up, but it can later be unplugged from the desktop.

Open webOS ported to the Google Galaxy Nexus
Developers managed to somehow port Open webOS 1.0 to the Google Galaxy Nexus on the day it was launched. It was a great effort as until that point we had only seen the new operating system demonstrated on an a TouchSmart PC by HP. In any case this port is still work in progress , with hardware acceleration still needing improvement.
With a goal to make the port eventually viable for day to day use, the team will have the processed published once they have fixed the bugs and can show a fully functional unit. You can check out the progress of the webOS port on the Galaxy Nexus below.

Palm Pre on Telcel receives (1.4.5) software update
The Palm Pre on Telcel has been updated to webOS 1.4.5. The Pre has been on webOS 1.4.1 for a long time now so it's quite a surprise that an update has found it's way to this device.
While the chances of getting webOS 2.0 or higher on the original Pre are far from likely it looks to have taken two years for Telcel to release the 1.4.5 update for their Pre handsets.

HP TouchPad successor in webOS future?
Following the all-hands meeting at HP today, there seamed to be some clarity on the future of WebOS. HP CEO Meg Whitman decided that the mobile operating system would be open sourced, but didn't give any indication that the company would follow up with any WebOS hardware. However during a follow up sit-down interview she confirmed that HP hopes to produce more hardware though it would likely only be by late next year or early 2013.
Could this also include a successor to the HP TouchPad?

WebOS to be open source
With the all-hands meeting concluding HP CEO Meg Whitman has made the final decision on the fate of WebOS. The mobile operating system will be open source.
This marks both a beginning and an ending of an era for WebOS which was purchased from Palm a year and a half ago as part of their acquisition. HP has since not been able to bring any innovative WebOS products to the market with attempts of the HP Pre 3 and the HP TouchPad only receiving lukewarm reception.
