How to host simple websites on your Google Drive

Google-Drive-launches
Google has made some changes to its Google Drive service which allows the content of HTML, JavaScript and CSS files to be shared to the public. Previously it has been possible to store web related files on Google Drive but you didn't have the option to share their contents as a website with others. Now this is possible with the Public on the web setting which allows HTML and CSS files and folders to be hosted on Google Drive as websites.

In order to host you website on Google Drive
  • Create a folder and share it as "Public on the web"
  • Upload your HTML, JavaScript and CSS files to that folder.
  • Find the URL of that folder by opening the HTML file you want to share and clicking the Preview button.
  • A new windows will open with a URL starting with "https://googledrive.com/host/..."
  • These webpages can be accessed by anyone, with or without a Google account.
There are certain limitation to what can be hosted. For example there is no back end processing for PHP or .Net pages, neither is there access to any form of database. Also keep in mind that embedded iframes wont work because of  security implementations.

Still there are many users who would be looking for basic website hosting and this solution should work for you. It is also very easy for those who want to collaborate website designs.
