Canonical releases Ubuntu 14.04


Today Canonical has released Ubuntu 14.0.4, which makes the Linux distribution full ready for tablets. The Phone version of Ubuntu Touch has essentially been ready since October last year, and with the release of version 14.04 (codenamed Trusty Tahr) we get even closer to the commercial release of Ubuntu smartphones and tablets.

Mozilla Firefox 28 is now available for download

Mozilla has released Firefox version 28.0 for Windows, Mac, Linux and Android platforms. The update brings a few new features and improvements to the web browser. Version 28 of Firefox for Windows was also supposed to bring the long-awaited Windows 8 Metro version of the browser, but it was removed from the final version citing poor demand.

Ubuntu convergence shows the same app running on a phone, tablet, and desktop

One of the most compelling visions for the future of computing is in the idea of convergence - the idea that there should be one operating system that spans all devices. Some companies like Microsoft and Google are taking a slow road to convergence while companies like Apple don't see it as a way forward. Canonical is the one company which has been working toward convergence with Ubuntu.

Firefox 27 is now available for download

Mozilla has released Firefox 27 for Windows, Mac and Linux platforms. The update reportedly makes the web browser faster, more secure and more social on the desktop platforms. Firefox for Android has also been updated with a fix for Flash on KitKat, WebRTC, new languages, UI tweaks and more.

Google Chrome updated (30.0) with image search for desktop and new gestures for Android

The Google Chrome web browser has been updated to version 30.0 for Windows, Mac and Android. The update brings several new features and improvements including a search by image function for desktop users and new gestures for Android Chrome users.

Firefox 23 is now available for download

Mozilla has released Firefox version 23 for Windows, Mac, Linux and Android. The update brings several new features and improvements including a slight modification to the logo. The desktop versions offer a new filter system that helps stop insecure content from any kind of unwanted threat. Although your HTTPS websites are secure as such, they often include non-secure content, but the filter in place will now mean that such content cannot be compromised.

Google Chrome updated (28.0) with rich notification center

Google Chrome has been updated to version 28 (28.0.1500.71) for Windows and Mac and brings a rich notification center (only on Windows) among other features and improvements. The Mac version is also said to be receiving the notification center, but for now its reported that “Mac is coming soon” without a specific date.

Ubuntu has released version 13.04 which is also known as Raring Ringtail. The update is a step in the company's attempt to position themselves as a strong offering as a desktop platform. Firefox 19 is now available for download

Mozilla has released Firefox 19 which follows the Firefox 18 release in January. The new version which is available to Windows, Mac OS and Linux computers, brings a few new features, improvements and bug fixes. The biggest addition for the new platform is the inclusion of a built-in PDF viewer, a feature found on other browsers that has been sorely missing for Firefox users.

Ubuntu for tablets officially unveiled


Ubuntu has unveiled Ubuntu for tablets, which is a tablet optimized version of Ubuntu which is visually similar to Ubuntu for Phones which was unveiled last month. Canonical has been planning to make Ubuntu an all-in-one operating system, to cover all devices from phones to tablets to desktops and TVs.

If you want a closer look at Ubuntu for tablets you can do so at the upcoming MWC, where devices running Ubuntu for tablet will be displayed. Additionally Ubuntu for tablet preview images will be available for download on February 21st, just like the Touch Preview of Ubuntu for Phones. These image files will be compatible with the Google Nexus 7 and the Google Nexus 10.

Canonical-LogoCanonical is getting set to releasing the preview image of Ubuntu for phones and a new countdown timer has shown up on the company’s website. The timer also includes the text "Tick, tock, tablet time!" which indicates that Canonical is about to show the work they have done on Ubuntu to make it tablet ready.

Ubuntu Phone images for Galaxy Nexus and Nexus 4 will be available on February 21st

The Canonical team promised to share some Ubuntu preview images and it looks like they won't keep us waiting much longer. The company announced that they will be releasing the Touch Developer Preview of Ubuntu Phone on February 21st, and that it will include support for the Google Galaxy Nexus and the Google Nexus 4.

Microsoft Surface Pro can run Linux

There were concerns that Microsoft will lock down Windows 8 tablets like the Microsoft Surface Pro, in the same way that the Microsoft Surface RT and other Windows RT tablets have their boot loader locked. In fact the Microsoft Surface Pro team have confirmed that the tablet will be able to run Linux in a dual-boot environment.

The information was revealed on a Reddit Ask Me About Anything session with Panos Panay, the Corporate Vice President at Microsoft, you plays a big part in the development of the Surface.

Google Now coming to desktops with card reminders and notifications

Google has continued to improve the features of Android over the last few months, with new features, improvements and an streamlined user interface. But one of the most intriguing features have been Google Now,  the company’s intelligent personal assistant which was named ‘Innovation of the Year’ for 2012 by Popular Science.

Now it looks like the company is planning to bring Google Now to its Chrome web browser. While Google hasn't made any official announcements in this regard, recent additions to Chromium suggest that it wont be long before Google Now becomes a core part of our web browsing experience.
