Google has released a new Hangouts app for Google Chrome. The company already has a Hangouts Extension for the platform, which allows communicating with your Hangouts friends, but the new standalone app works much like Facebook's chatheads feature, but for your desktop.

Google promised that they would be bringing some useful enhancements to their Chrome OS platform, during the Google I/O in June, including the ability to run Android apps on Chromebooks. Now Google has announced the first group of apps which can run on Chrome OS.

Microsoft updates Office Online, now available in the Chrome Web Store
Microsoft has released a major update for Office Online (available on office.com). Along with the update, Microsoft has also released their web based Office apps on the Chrome Web Store. You can now add Word Online, PowerPoint Online, and OneNote Online to your Chrome App launcher.
Users of the Chrome web browser and Chrome OS will be able to launch the Office apps and create Office documents online with a single click from their desktops.

Google brings the Chromecast to Canada and Europe
Google finally brought the Chromecast digital media player to Canada and several countries in Europe. Sundar Pichai, Google's vice president, announced that the media streaming device will be available in Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, and the United Kingdom starting today.

Samsung Chromebook 2 officially announced
The Samsung Chromebook 2 was officially announced today. The device comes in two forms - a 11.6 inch model and a 13.3 inch model. The new Samsung Chromebooks come with an “elegant stitched design”, which is the same faux-leather styling that we can see on Samsung’s Galaxy Note 3 and the Galaxy NotePRO and TabPRO Series tablets.

Today was a day full of announcements from Google, which included a new Google Nexus 7 and Android 4.3 Jelly Bean. But one of the most interesting announcements came in the small form of the Google Chromecast.
The Chromecast is a tiny dongle which you can attach to your TV HDMI port and allows you to control your TV from a range of Android, iOS devices or a Windows or Mac computer which is running Google Chrome.

Newest Chrome OS update offers in-browser Office document editing in beta
Chromebooks are portable and fast and help you get online quickly and easily, but they lack an important feature: the ability to natively edit Microsoft Office documents. Even though you can justify the lack of this feature on regular Chromebooks, its frustrating when when a premium device like the Chromebook Pixel is unable to edit your Office documents.
However it looks like Google is ready to solve this issue by introducing native in-browser editing for Microsoft Office documents like Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

Hangouts will receive SMS and outbound call support soon
Google released their unified messaging client Hangouts for Android, iOS and Chrome which brings several features. It is offered as an update to Google Talk for Android and allows iOS users to stay in touch with their Android friends. It even upgrades GMail chat and Google+ Hangouts but lacks one feature that users were really looking forward to - SMS support.
The good news is Google has confirmed that SMS support is in the works and it will be available for Hangouts "soon".
