The HTC 8XT for Sprint is now receiving the Windows Phone Update 3 (GDR3) which brings several improvements and enhancements to the device. This is the first update for the HTC 8XT since the handset was launched back on July 19th of this year.
The main purpose of the GDR3 update for Windows Phone is the inclusion of support for 1080p displays, larger display sizes and quad-core processors. But the current generation Windows Phones also get some new features
For example, after the update, HTC 8XT users will be able to lock the orientation of the phone in portrait or landscape. Another feature included in GDR3 is Driving Mode, which keeps you safe when you drive by turning off talk and text connectivity while you are driving. A text written in advance can be set to automatically be sent out to those trying to reach you. In multitasking view, open apps can be closed by clicking on the 'X' in the upper right corner. And the user can set certain tones to represent a text message, voicemail or a reminder.
The update also finally adds the ability to connect to Wi-Fi during the device setup process. Generally users have to connect to their data plan during setup in order to sync their data or restore their devices. Lastly, Microsoft has finally had the time to bake a fix for the Windows Phone 8 storage issue into the Windows Phone 8 Update 3. This issue caused duplicate files of pictures meant to be uploaded to the cloud to be stored to the "other" area in the phone's internal storage. This would then cause users to run out of storage area on their devices. The GDR3 update gives users detailed information of what is taking up storage space on their phone, and allows you to free what you need.
The update comes with the 2.12.651.02 software version and you should receive an automatic notification when it is available for your device. In case you do not receive the notification you can manually check for the update under Settings > Phone Update.
