Apple Mac OS X (10.10) Yosemite Gold Master (GM) released

Apple Mac OS X (10.10) YosemiteApple has released the Gold Master (GM) build of Mac OS X (10.10) Yosemite, indicating that the latest version of their desktop operating system is nearly ready for public consumption.

OS X Mavericks was first unveiled back in June, bringing the modern, flattened user interface from iOS 7 into Mac OS. While the features have not changed much since Mavericks, visually Apple has brought uniformity between their desktop and mobile platforms.

While the new features may not be many, they are still useful enhancements that tie both mobile and desktop platforms. For example, the newly introduced Continuity feature will allow users to Handoff content between iOS 8 and OS X Yosemite. Other improvements include enhancements to Mail and Messages as well as the Safari browser.

Developers who want to take a last look at the Yosemite GM can download the update through the Mac App Store or the Mac Developer Portal. The access to pre-release software is available for a n annual registration fee of $99 or by joining the free Mac Beta seed program.

Others can sit back and wait, as the GM release indicates that the final release is just weeks away. Based on history, we can expect Apple will release OS X Yosemite in the second half of October 2014, accompanied by a new lineup of Mac hardware. Apple is also expected to release a new series of iPads, with the imminent release of iOS 8.1.
