OUR REVIEW

PressReader for Android is available for smartphones and tablets and while the PressReader app works well on both interfaces the team has released a separate PressReader for Android HoneyComb app which has been optimized for  devices.

The free version will give you a 24 hour trial and you will be presented with popular newspapers in a stand format, allowing you to select and download your favorite content. The app seems to automatically show content based on your location, but you can tap sources on the top left and choose the list of 95 countries in 56 languages to download your favorite newspapers or magazines.

You can get access to the Premium services with a subscription. Once you have subscribed, simply click authorize under the (gear) settings icon on the top right and sign into your Press Display account.

Once your favorite newspaper has been downloaded you can either have the app read it out to you or read it by swiping through the pages. The interface supports tap to zoom and pinch to zoom and you can press the page to access the toolbar.

You have a toolbar at the bottom which allows you to quickly jump to your favorite section and a Smart Flow and Page View mode you can switch between. The Page View mode is more your regular style reading, while the Smart Flow mode enhances Page View by helping you discover more information on the topic you are interested in.

Smart Flow can be enabled or disabled in PressReader’s Setting menu (By default, SmartFlow will either be turned on or off depending on screen resolution. SmartFlow is not available on Android 2.3 Gingerbread devices).

on the Motorola Xoom which I used to test the app the flow seems a little slow and choppy and there is a slight delay for the text to be rendered when you zoom in, however the experience should be much better on a newer more powerful devices.

PressReader is available for:
