[Guide] How to Root the Google Nexus 7 on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean


The Google Galaxy 7 is the company’s first tablet in the Nexus Series and the first to run Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. The device features a 7 inch touch display, up to 16GB of internal storage, a camera for video calls and is powered by a quad-core processor from NVidia.

The following guide will demonstrate how to Root, unlock Bootloader and Flash ClockwordMod Recovery on your Google Nexus 7.

Unlock the Bootloader
  1. Download and install the Android SDK.
    -
  2. Enable USB Debugging on your device through Settings > Developer Options. - 
  3. Connect your device to your computer through USB.
    - 
  4. Launch Command Prompt / Terminal
    • Navigate to the fastboot folder in your Android SDK
    • Enter the following commands:
      fastboot oem unlock
    • Once flashing is complete enter:
      fastboot reboot
    • Download recovery.img and place it in the fastboot folder
    • Now type the following:
      fastboot flash recovery CWM-grouper-recovery.img
    • Next type the following to reboot
      fastboot reboot
      -
    Make ClockworkMod Recovery Permanent
  5. Enter the following commands in order to make the ClockworkMod Recovery state permanent:
    mount system
    adb shell
    cd /system
    mv recovery-from-boot.p recovery-from-boot.bak



    Gain Root Access
  6. Download JB-SuperSU.zip and place it under /sdcard on your device.
    - 
  7. Enter ClockworkMod Recovery by;
    • Switching your device off
    • Switch it on using Volume Up + Volume Down + Power
    • Wait until you see the CWM logo

  8. From the main menu of CWM go to zip from sdcard > choose zip from sdcard > JB-SuperSu.zip
    - 
  9. From the main menu select reboot system now
Your Google Nexus 7 should now be rooted on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean
