Google Play Edition devices will receive Android 5.0 Lollipop "early next week"

Google Play Edition devices

When Google first unveiled Android 5.0 Lollipop last month, they promised to bring the update to their Nexus and Google Play Edition (GPE) devices within weeks. Now that the Nexus devices started receiving Lollipop a few days ago, it looks like the company has shifted its focus to its GPE devices.

The news comes from HTC Vice President of Product Management, Mo Versi, who stated on Twitter that the "target is early next week" for the GPE Lollipop update. The HTC One and the HTC One M8 both have GPE variants on the Google Play Store, alongside devices from  Samsung, Motorola, LG and Sony. Even though Google updates the GPE devices directly, this can only be done after manufacturers send it the relevant device drivers to Google.

While the other manufacturers have not confirmed the Lollipop release date for their GPE devices, we assume the update should arrive for the entire lineup around the same time. We will be keeping a lookout for the update, but if you own one of the GPE devices, feel free to drop us a comment and let us know if you receive Lollipop.

Google Play Edition devices are usually offered to customers as a quick way to get stock Android updates, instead of having to wait for manufacturers to release their skinned updates.

Meanwhile other Android owners can check out our list for when your device will receive Android 5.0 Lollipop.
