Microsoft announces Lumia Denim update, coming in Q4 2014

Today Microsoft announced the Nokia Lumia 830 and the Nokia Lumia 730 at their IFA 2014 event. But the company also took the time to unveil their next firmware update for their Lumia devices - Lumia Denim. Both newly announced devices will come with Lumia denim out of the box, but the update will also make its way to the rest of the Lumia lineup.

Lumia Denim comes as an update to Windows Phone 8.1 devices and brings several improvements to Microsoft's virtual assistant, Cortana. Users will be able to summon Cortana by simply saying "Hey, Cortana!", the same way Android users say "OK Google" to enable Google Now. Additionally Cortana will be able to keep tabs on your whereabouts and recognize the geographic areas in which you currently are.

Lumia Denim also brings enhancements to the camera software on supported devices. Microsoft claims that the camera will not only start faster, but also snap individual photos in a quicker fashion. What's more, you can now snap a 4K video clip and still images at the same time. If you have missed the moment, you will be able to extract photos from an already-recorded 4K video.

The update will be released in an alpha form to users in India and Canada, while its beta version will be tested in UK and China. The final version of Lumia Denim will arrive in Q4 2014 and will first arrive for the Lumia 930, Lumia Icon and Lumia 1520. While these three devices along with the two newly announced handsets will get the full features of Lumia Denim, it is not known how much of the update will be available for the rest of the Lumia lineup.
