Microsoft has just confirmed that it will stop supporting its Windows Phone 7.8 platform on September 9, 2014. Honestly though, it doesn't feel like the platform has been getting much attention for a long time now, and the drop of support will mark the final nail on the Windows Phone 7.8 coffin.
Microsoft will however continue to offer security updates and hotfixes to Windows Phone 7.8 devices through its Extended Support channel for another 5 years. During said time period, Microsoft won't accept any requests for design changes for the platform. Hopefully, most users will have moved on to devices that run an up-to-date version of Windows Phone by that time.
Microsoft released Windows Phone 7.8 as an update to Windows Phone 7.5 devices in early 2013, instead of updating them to the more advanced Windows Phone 8. While the Windows Phone 7.8 update did brings some novel features like the resizable Live Tiles and deeper customization, it didn't solve the major issue faced by Windows Phone users, which was the lack of mainstream apps.
Microsoft chose to fully ignore its Windows Phone 7.8 user community at this point shifting its entire focus on Windows Phone 8 and its future instead. Windows Phone 7.8 users have not received any new features since its release and have had no choice but to switch platforms or purchase a new Windows Phone 8 device in order to get new apps and updates.
We hoped that Microsoft and Nokia would at least unlock their popular devices like the Lumia 900, Lumia 800 and Lumia 710, so developers can make make some use of the underlying hardware.
