T-Mobile continues VoLTE expansion, upgrades 2G to 4G and more

T-Mobile

T-Mobile is keeping to its promise and continues upgrading its service across the U.S.. Firstly, the carrier's VoLTE service has been expanded to cover Greensburg, Jacksonville, Northern Denver, Fontana, Albany, New York and Pittsburgh. Last month users in Chicago, San Francisco, California, Dallas and Houston reported their phones running the new system.

So how would we know if we were covered by the VoLTE service? Just attempt a call when you are connected to your LTE network, and you will notice that the LTE connection will remain active instead of switching to HSPA during the call.

In addition to the new voice transfer system, T-Mobile is slowly continuing its expansion of Wideband LTE. In order to benefit from this service, you will need to own a category 4 device (Nexus 5, LG G2 and Galaxy Note 3). You can check if you've got Wideband by running a speed test. Results higher than 30Mbps are a guarantee that you're running on 15+15 or 20+20 LTE. If you wish to be completely sure - you can access the information of the bands you are using via your handset's Service Mode. Category 3 devices (like the iPhone 5, iPhone 5s, iPhone 5c, Galaxy S3, Galaxy S4, Galaxy Note 2 and others) would still be compatible, but will not show a huge improvement over the current data transfer system.

T-Mobile has also continued to expand its coverage across the nation. Since the carrier's announcement of the new data transfer back in November 2013, it has been spotted and tested in Dallas, Winder, Portland, West Valley City. This week Green Bay and Manitowoc have been added to its coverage. Speeds ranging from 40Mbps up to 100Mbps and sometimes even slightly above have been experienced.

Last but not least, the carrier is continuing its trend to upgrade its 2G/EDGE pipeline to 4G/LTE. The company plans to upgrade its entire network and eventually shut down 2G.
