[Android app] Google Hangouts update lets you set custom ringtones and notification sounds

Google HangoutsGoogle Hangouts for Android has been updated to version 2.1.2 which brings custom ringtones to the messaging application. SO if you don't like the default Hangouts ringtone, you finally have the option to change it to something you would prefer.

You can download the update directly on your device through the Google Play Store or by using the following link:

You can set a custom ringtone for each one of your conversations, which for example allows you to easily differentiate exactly which one of your contacts is texting you. You can find and enable this option in the People & Options menu for each Hangouts conversation.

Additionally Hangouts now uses the Contact Card image as your contact's default picture in Hangouts. Previously, the app would automatically pulled the Google+ profile picture of a given user and used it. This likely means that this update has finally merged the Hangouts conversation with the regular SMS messages for a seamless stream of messaging.

Google Hangouts for Android version 2.1.2 has the following official changelog:
  • Customize ringtones for each of your Hangouts
  • Block SMS messages from specific phone numbers
  • Restore contacts that you have previously hidden
  • Layout support for right-to-left languages
Leave us a comment if you come across any new features once you have installed the latest version of Hangouts on your device.
