Usually Windows Phones have always been a step behind Android in the specs department. This year however we see the Nokia Lumia 1520 is poised and ready to take on the usual barrage of Android smartphone flagships including the Samsung Galaxy S5. But does the Lumia 1520 have what it takes to convert a Galaxy fanboy? Lets find out
The Lumia 1520 was launched in the US through AT&T at a very competitive $100 on-contract price. This was an amazing value for what the device offered, but the carrier seems to have increased the price to $200, which happens to be the same cost as the Galaxy S5. In terms of off-contract prices, the Lumia 1520 still costs only $585 compared to the $650 pricing of the newer Galaxy S5.
In terms of hardware, the Lumia 1520 has the advantage of a larger display and a 20MP camera with Optical Image Stabilization. With the Galaxy S5 we get some added value from the finger print scanner, heart rate monitor and IP67 protection not found on the Windows Phone. You also get a slightly faster processor, but unless you are into the "value" features of the Galaxy S5 we feel the Lumia 1520 is the better performer of the two.
On the software side you get Android 4.4.2 with an updated TouchWiz Nature UX on your Galaxy S5. While we are personally not fans of TouchWiz itself, Android is still a more mature platform than Windows Phone, with a more diverse set of features and a larger catalog of apps. Even though Windows Phones still perform better than Android in most cases, the customizability appeal of Android is undeniable. Microsoft's mobile platform will take a huge step forward once the Windows Phone 8.1 update arrives, but Android will still be the more mature platform of the two.
At the end of the day, you will get an amazing device either way, so its important to understand which of the two will serve you best. Check if you favorite apps are available on both platforms and try both devices out at your local carrier store before picking one for yourself.
