Yahoo Messenger will lose several features starting December 14th

Yahoo is going through several changes under the leadership of its new CEO Marissa Mayer, who promised a strong mobile strategy for Yahoo as part of her plan to bring back the Internet giant to its former glory.

Part of the strategy will bring several changes to the company’s Yahoo Messenger which will lose several of its features starting December 14th in its attempt to meet its company’s new vision.

Some of the features it will be loosing is its interoperability with Windows Live Messenger, its ability to handle calls (Yahoo! Voice Phone), video conferencing and group messaging. Yahoo! also announced that it close Messenger public chat rooms and Yahoo! Messenger Pingbox, which is an integrated social network and blog tool.

The biggest loss would definitely be Yahoo! Messenger’s interoperability with Windows Live. While your Live contacts will still appear on your contact list, you will not be able to message them after December 14th.

If you use Yahoo! Messenger on Android or iOS, you will notice some of the removed functionality taking effect as well. Free international SMS texts will continue to work and you can send messages to cell phone users around the world including US, Philippines, Vietnam, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Canada, Pakistan, Kuwait and Thailand. Facebook support will also remain

Yahoo will also close its Yahoo! Voice Phone In and Phone Out on January 30, 2013. This will also include its branded landline component which is managed by Jajah. Users will no longer be able to add funds to their account and current balances will be refunded.
