Recently users of the unlocked Nokia Lumia 800 started receiving the Windows Phone 7.8 update, which raised hopes of a global rollout of Windows Phone 7.8. Unfortunately this is not the case, as Nokia has explained that those Nokia Lumia 800 updates which were released were just trial runs to test the new software and that the actual Windows Phone 7.8 update is not expected to be ready for release until early next year.
Microsoft has also already confirmed that the Windows Phone 7.8 update wont be released until 2013, but with the recent leaks of the update on Nokia’s servers through Navifirm, users had some hope that they will have the update in time for the holidays.
We honestly don’t understand why this update is taking so long in the first place. We feel it is a somewhat poor attempt by Microsoft to make up for refusing Windows Phone 8 to loyal users who chose to trust the company with Windows Phone 7.5. The only valuable addition it brings is the WP8 style start screen, with resizable widgets. It also brings 10 new theme and accent colors, Bing Picture of the Day on the lock screen, security updates and new Nokia apps for Lumia devices.
Meanwhile WP8 leaps forward with features like NFC, Xbox Music & Video, OTA updates, lockscreen updates, improved multi tasking, WP Sync with Windows 8 and much more. Leaving WP7.8 users with no choice but to upgrade or remain with an outdated operating system.
