HTC 8S will be first to receive constant Wi-Fi connectivity update

Windows Phone devices switch of the Wi-Fi connection as part of the operating system’s power saving features. Given that Wi-Fi users relatively low power, its strange that Microsoft chose to add this feature to their platform. This can also be frustrating for users who like to stream music or stay connected to their messaging apps like WhatsApp.

It turns out that a fix is in the works and the news has been confirmed by Microsoft’s Joe Belfiore. In fact the fix has even been demonstrated working on a HTC Windows Phone 8S.

What happens is that once your Wi-Fi connection is switched off, the device searches for and connects to a cellular data connection in order to stay connected. This can result in data overages on your plans and has been a subject of criticism by Windows Phone users.

The HTC 8S which has still not been launched is shown to be running a newer version of Windows Phone 8. The option to Keep Wi-Fi running when the screen times out has been made available under the Wi-Fi connections advanced settings.

Its great that this feature is coming and it will likely be available on the HTC 8S when it launches. Hopefully it will be made available for all Windows Phone 8 devices soon after.

Windows Phone 7.5 device owners also face the same issue and we hope that Microsoft will include this feature as part of Windows Phone 7.8 as well.
