Sharp introduces thin and efficient IGZO displays

Sharp has introduced a new type of LCD and OLED screen technology called IGZO (iridium, gallium, zinc oxide) which promises to be thinner, with higher resolutions, smaller bezels and better efficiency due to more transparent pixels. IGZO does that by introducing crystallinity to the amorphous silicon typically used for production

Back in April Sharp announced that its factory in Kameyama, Japan is finally turning out IGZO LED panels. The displays are being made for mostly smartphones and tablets but its possible that other sizes are also being produced.

The company will also show three other types of displays which you can see in the detailed table below:

LCD display
Screen size 4.9 inch 6.1 inch
Resolution (pixels) 720 x 1280 2560 x 1600
Pixel density 302 ppi 498 ppi
Envisioned application Smartphones Mobile devices

Organic EL display
Screen size 13.5 inch 3.4 inch
Resolution (pixels) 3840 x 2160 (QFHD) 540 x 960
Pixel density 326 ppi 326 ppi
Outstanding features White OLEDs + RGB color filters Flexible type

One interesting item is the bendable OLED screen which we hope to eventually see in our smartphones and tablets someday. Sharp's IGZO screens will be at the SID display expo in Boston, starting next Tuesday.
