[Guide] How to Jailbreak your device on iOS 5.0.1 using Redsn0w


The latest iOS version 5.0.1 has been jailbroken with the use of Redsn0w. The jailbreak method is still tethered and requires you to plug your device onto your PC or Mac if you reboot it to retain the jailbreak.

Before proceeding with the guide, please ensure you understand the consequences of jailbreaking your device. Jailbreaking may void your device warranty and may affect the overall performance of your device.

NOTE - This guide is not applicable to the iPhone 4S or the iPad 2 and are advised to stay away from iOS 5.0.1 until the untethered jailbreak is made available.

NOTE - If you rely on the GEVEY SIM method to or other unlock your device, skip to the GEVEY SIM section at the bottom of the page.

The step by step guide to jailbreak your device on iOS 5.0.1 using Redsn0w follows:

  1. Download and install iTunes 10.5 for your Mac or PC.
  2. Backup your device on iTunes
  3. Download iOS 5.0 for your device
  4. Download and update your device to iOS 5.0.1
  5. Download the latest version of Redsn0w for Windows or Mac.
  6. Run Redsn0w
  7. Click 'Extras'
    • Click 'Select IPSW' and browse to your iOS 5.0 IPSW file downloaded in Step 3."

  8. Click 'Jailbreak'
    • Select 'Install Cydia'
    • Follow the screen prompts to enter DFU mode.
    • Allow Redsn0w to apply the jailbreak.

  9. Now you have to Boot Tethered
    • Launch Redsn0w
    • Select 'Extras'.
    • Click 'Just Boot'.
    • You will have to perform this action every time you reboot this device.

UNLOCKERS
If you use an unlocking method similar to GEVEY SIM unlock you should create a custom IPSW file and preserve your baseband.
  1. Download iOS 5.0.1
  2. Open Redsn0w
    • Select Extras
    • Select Custom IPSW
    • Browse and select the iOS 5.0.1 firmware file downloaded in Step 1.
  3. Click Extras
    • Select 'Pwned DFU' to enter pwned DFU mode.
  4. Restore custom firmware
    • Connect your device to iTunes
    • Select your device on the left sidebar on iTunes
    • Click Shift on PC or Alt in Mac and restore your pwned firmware.
