Check out the new Google Calendar for Android

All of Google's apps are being treated to Material Design makeovers these days, but it looks like the Google Calendar is set to get some special treatment. Not only will the Calendar be getting a new look, but it will also be getting several new features and improvements.

There are three new features coming to Google Calendar - For starters, your Google Calendar will be much smarter with Automatic calendar entries based on GMail messages. Calendar will scan your incoming email for reservations or appointments and the information will be automatically added to your calendar, "complete with things like flight numbers and check-in times". Even better, the event will be automatically updated if there is something like a flight delay.

Next we have a feature Google calls Assists, which auto-completes suggestions for calendar entries. Calendar will learn your habits and suggest entries based on things you've done before, it will find places and pull in addresses and phone numbers for you and more.

The final new feature is Schedule View, which gives you everything you need to do in a card list form. The nice thing here is that Google will automatically add images to entries based on context, so flight reminders will have an image of your destination, and dinner reservations have an illustration of food.

Google Calendar for Android will updated to the newest version in the "coming weeks", as long as you are running Android 4.1 or greater. Those who own a Google Nexus 9 will be able to try out the new Google Calendar right now. Google also stated that they were working on an iOS version, but there is no word on when it will be released.

[UPDATE] Well it looks like the updated version of Google Calendar for Android has arrived in the form of an APK file. The APK will only work on a Nexus device for now, running Android 4.0.3 or greater... If you have a smartphone or tablet that meets that criteria, feel free to download the APK and try it out.

If you don't own a Nexus device, you will have to wait for version 5.0 of Google Calender for Android to be pushed to the Google Play Store. Google has promised that it will arrive in the coming weeks, but that can feel like an eternity in the tech world.
