Google launched the Android One initiative as a way to bring affordable smartphones to users in emerging markets. Android One devices run on stock Android and are supposed to get quick updates to the latest version of the platform. While the Nexus series and Google Play Edition may be higher on Google's update priority, it looks the the Android One devices are next in line for Android 5.0 Lollipop.
For the Indian market, Google partnered with manufacturers to bring affordable devices like the Micromax Canvas A1, Spice Dream UNO, and the Karbonn Sparkle V at affordable prices to users.
Speaking for IndiaToday, Spice Mobility's CEO, Prashant Bindal, says that the company's Android One-based Dream Uno smartphone will get the Lollipop update in January 2015. Citing other, unspecified sources within Spice, the publication also points out that the update is already consumer-ready and user devices may start receiving it as soon as mid-December. Since all Android One devices run on identical hardware, signed off by Google, it is expected that when the update becomes available, all Android One-based devices will get it - regardless of brand.
