Microsoft releases Windows Phone 8.1 with Cyan for Nokia Lumia Windows Phone 8 devices

Lumia Cyan with Windows Phone 8.1

Starting today, Microsoft is releasing the Windows Phone 8.1 update with Lumia Cyan to Nokia Lumia Windows Phone 8 devices. This means users in the U.S., will gain access to Cortana, Microsoft's digital virtual assistant along with several new features and improvements.

Other improvements to Windows Phones include an updated version of Office for Windows Phone, a third column of Live Tiles and the ability to have a custom background on the start screen. After the update, users will have the ability to save apps to their microSD card, which in turn will save the internal storage space on your handset. The Nokia camera will also be receiving some changes thanks to the Lumia Cyan update, including enhanced low-light capabilities on some models like the Nokia Lumia 1520 and the Nokia Lumia Icon; those two models will be able to employ Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 surround sound when shooting video. For Lumia owners, the Nokia Storyteller app will be available after the update is installed, allowing them to create a story with a video slideshow, that can be send to social media.

You will also find a new Action Center for notifications, and the Swype-like "Word Flow" for the QWERTY keyboard. IE 11 will save and remember passwords, and will also support HTML5 for YouTube playback. Earlier this year, we put together a list of changes expected with the update. All Lumia handsets running Windows Phone 8 are expected to receive the Windows Phone 8.1 update, from the entry-level Nokia Lumia 520, to the Nokia Lumia 1520 phablet.

The update will be rolling out OTA and if you don't get it immediately, be patient. You can also try to pull it out manually by going to Settings > Phone update. If you do receive the Windows Phone update with Nokia Cyan, please leave us a comment and let us know.
