Its quite common for a new flagship device to be rooted almost as soon as it is released. The Samsung Galaxy S5 is no exception, and Chainfire has managed to root the upcoming flagship two weeks ahead of its scheduled release.
Rooting an Android smartphone or tablet, similar to jailbreaking an iOS device, allowing the user to get right into the depths of the operating system, making changes and alterations to the file system that simply aren't possible in its regular state. Of course, since rooting gives you a license to meddle with files critical to the smooth running of a device, there's an element of risk if you're careless in your approach, but as daunting as it may seem, rooting and experimenting with Android is both enjoyable and rewarding when done in the correct manner.
Chainfire’s root solution has finally been published after being tested on the Galaxy S5's retail firmware, and initially supported only on International version of the model.

[NOTE] The following guide is based on the International Samsung Galaxy S5. If you have a different variant of the Galaxy S5 you can download the appropriate CF-Auto-Root package before your proceed with this guide.
Requirements
- Download Chainfire’s CF-AutoRoot package
- Download, install and configure Samsung Android USB drivers.
- Enable USB Debugging on your Galaxy S5.
- Download, install and configure Odin3
- Backup all your data on your device. You can follow our guide on "How to perform a backup of your Android device to PC without rooting".
- Make sure your battery is fully charged
Guide to root your Samsung Galaxy S5 on Android 4.4.2
- Download Chainfire's CF-Auto-Root package from the above link, extract the zip file so you are left with the .tar.md5 file.
- - Make sure your device is not connected to computer, run run Odin3-v3.0.7.exe previously installed.
- - Click the PDA button, before selecting CF-Auto-Root-klte-kltexx-smg900f.tar (the file you extracted in Step 1).
- - As usual, place your device into Download Mode. To do this, switch your device off, then hold Volume Down + Home + Power.
- - Next, connect your device to your computer, and ensure that ‘repartition‘ is unchecked. Hit Start.
- - Finally, Android will boot, and you’ll be rooted on Android 4.4.2 KitKat.
CF-Auto-Root Packages
Please make sure your download the correct CF-Auto-Root package before installing it on your device. Installing the wrong package can cause permanent damage to your Galaxy S5. First make sure you check your handset model by heading to Settings > About phone > Model number.
