Samsung Galaxy S III for Sprint receives Android 4.4 KitKat software update

Samsung Galaxy S III for Sprint

The Samsung Galaxy S5 was launched with Android 4.4 KitKat out of the box, and most US and international variants of the Samsung Galaxy S4 have received the KitKat update. Now the latest version of Android is rolling out to the from 2012 and Sprint seems to be the first US carrier to offer the update.

The nation's third largest carrier has updated their support page for the Galaxy S III saying that the update will start rolling out today. Sprint's support page doesn't mention anything new aside from the 4.4 software update, the first since 4.3 way back in November. A few changes are bound to be included, but apparently Sprint didn't think they were worth explanation.

The update will be pushed out to Galaxy S III owners of Sprint OTA (over-the-air) and you should receive a notification when the update is available for your device. Keep in mind that such updates generally roll out in stages, so it maybe awhile before it reaches your device. If you have not received a notification, you could manually check for the update under your Settings menu.

If you are impatient to wait for the automated rollout, you could head over to the Sprint Galaxy S III sub-forum on XDA and download the 500MB update ZIP file. Experienced Android users would you know that if you've rooted your phone and/or installed a custom recovery, you're almost guaranteed to fail the update. You'll need to either find a way to revert to an older stock software build or wait for someone to release a flashable 4.4 update. Once you have ensured you are running a stock version of Android, you can download and manually flash the L710VPUCND8 update.

If you are a Galaxy S III owner on Sprint who has received the OTA update, please leave a comment with a screenshot for your fellow readers.
