How to enable lockscreen widgets in Android 4.4 KitKat

Lockscreen widgets were introduced with  allowing users to add widgets to their home screens for quick access to their most recent information. However those who have tried out the new Google Nexus 5 or installed an early KitKat build on their devices would have found the lockscreen widgets were no longer available.

As you may know with the added flexibility of these widgets, we also face a security risk, where where anyone could pick up your phone and add widgets for access to private information. Because of this Google has chosen to disable lockscreen widgets by default on Android KitKat.

Luckily the lockscreen widgets have not been removed altogether. Instead it has been Nestled appropriately under the "Security" section of the device settings, you'll see a line item for Enable widgets.

All you need to do is check the box next to Enable widgets and you'll be able to add lock screen widgets in the same way you did for Jelly Bean devices. Leave it unchecked, and you'll not be able to. If it's unchecked, and you're using a secure lock method, nobody else will be able to, either.

While finding this should be easy enough for an Android professional, it maybe harder to find if you are a novice or new user. But we applaud Google for putting security first, though we wish such security fixes will make their way to older versions of Android.
