Google announces Android 4.4 KitKat

Google has just announced that their next version of their mobile platform will be Android 4.4 KitKat. After over a year of speculation that Google will use Key Lime Pie as the title for their next desert, their choice of KitKit comes as a bit of a pleasent surprise.

Its interesting that Google has chosen to take a step forward in their desert name, but have kept the Android version as an interaction of the previous build instead of moving to Android 5.0 instead.

While Google has stated that their goal with Android KitKat is to "make an amazing Android experience available for everybody", they have not mentioned any specific Android 4.4 features.

Android head Sundar Pichair posted a picture of the Android 4.4 KitKat statue along with the following message.
" On my return from Asia, I was also thrilled to find this guy waiting to greet me on the front lawn — love the new #AndroidKitKat statue and can’t wait to release the next version of the platform that is as sweet as the candy bar that’s one of our team’s favorites:)
With Google winding down their Nexus 4 sales and a possible Nexus 5 announcement next month it certainly sounds like the time is right for the next version of Android to make its debut.

The announcement comes amidst Microsoft stealing the headlines by acquiring Nokia's mobile division. Its clear that Google chose to attempt overshadowing Microsoft's announcement with one of their own.
