The Barnes and Noble Nook HD and Nook HD+ run customized versions of the Android operating system with their own App Stores. While they are available at very competitive prices, it is sometimes hard to choose one of these tablets due to the lack of official apps on their store compared to the vast number of apps available to Android tablets through Google Play.

However it looks like this is about to change as a new OTA (over-the-air) update which is being released for these tablets brings access to the official Google Play Store.

The update brings software version 2.1.0 and the official changelog states that users will get access to Google Services like the Play Store, GMail, Chrome, YouTube, Maps and more.

Generally companies like Barnes & Noble and Amazon use their lineup of tablets to bring customers to use their content. It will be interesting to see how directing their customers to Google Play content will help them on the long run, especially since they sell their devices at lower prices in the hopes that consumers will purchase their hardware and pay for their content on the B&N stores instead of iTunes or Google Play.

In any case the customers have a great deal on their hands here, and the B&N tablet has suddenly become one of the hottest choices in the affordable tablet market.

The update notification should arrive on your devices soon, but you can also consider manually installing the update by following the source link below.
