OUR REVIEW

PressReader for iOS is a universal app which will work on your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch. When you download PressReader for iOS you will receive 7 issues for free. You more content you will have to subscribe on a monthly basis at a cost of $39.99. Once you have subscribed, click the (gear) settings icon on the top right, select authorize and sign into your Press Display account.

The app seems to automatically show content based on your location, but you can tap sources on the top left and choose the list of 97 countries in 54 languages to download your favorite newspapers or magazines.

Once your favorite newspaper has been downloaded you can either have the app read it out to you or read it by swiping through the pages. The interface supports tap to zoom and pinch to zoom and you can press the page to access the toolbar.

You have a toolbar at the bottom which allows you to quickly jump to your favorite section and a Smart Flow and Page View mode you can switch between. The Page View mode is more your regular style reading, while the Smart Flow mode enhances Page View by helping you discover more information on the topic you are interested in.

We tested PressReader for iOS on the Apple iPad 4 and we found the experience to be quite acceptable. Zooming in and out of text is smooth and so is swiping between pages. However there is a little choppiness when Smart Flow is enabled. Is is also important to note that even through the app is optimized for the Retina Display, the images on the magazines are not, and you will notice that when you zoom into pictures.

Smart Flow can be enabled or disabled in PressReader’s Setting menu (Defaults to ON for the Apple iPad 2 or higher and OFF for original Apple iPad).
