Apple iPhone 4S receives iOS 6.1.1 software update

Apple released iOS 6.1 to the public just a couple of weeks ago for the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. Now they are following up with a release of iOS 6.1.1, but it is now available to download ONLY for the Apple iPhone 4S.

Its very rarely that we see an iOS update being released so quickly following a release, especially since iOS 6.1 spent months of testing before being released to the public. However it turned out that that issues with the iPhone 4S had slipped by unnoticed and started cropping up once the devices, particularly connectivity issues, sending email, texts and entering a network.

These connectivity issues seem to have primarily affected users in Europe who rely on Microsoft Exchange support. Since the business sector is a largely attributed to iPhone sales, it is clear why Apple prioritized releasing the update quickly.

The change-log of the update indicates that iOS 6.1.1 build 10B145 fixes issues which could impact performance and reliability for iPhone 4S.

You can download the update directly on your device OTA (over-the-air) or by connecting your device to iTunes. You can also download the update manually from the following link and update it through iTunes.

Apple seeding iOS 6.1.1 Beta 1 to developers last week, with enhancements to the Maps app, specially improving performance for users in Japan: 3D views for major buildings in the country, such as Tokyo Station, Japan Imperial Palace and Tokyo Tower, were added, and quite a lot of improvements to turn-by-turn directions were added, such much improved pronunciation of the names of streets, indication of upcoming tolls, along with other minor changes aimed at making the app more accurate and reliable.

Apple has been criticized for replacing Google Maps with Apple Maps on , which led to inaccuracies and other problems that have slowly been fixed over the last few months. Apparently, these Maps changes are not included to the build released for iPhone 4S today, Apple will likely push out 6.1.2 for 6.2 with all these changes for all the iOS devices.

Keep in mind that you don’t have to update your device unless you are having issues sending text messages, have difficulty connecting to your data network or regularly use Microsoft Exchange.

Also keep in mind that the update will likely patch the exploit used by Evasi0n jailbreak tool. We will have to wait for the Evad3rs jailbreak team to confirm when their jailbreak tool will be updated for iOS 6.1.1.
