Apple has just announced that the fourth-gen iPad will now offer up to 128GB of internal storage – which is double the maximum storage currently offered on the device. Apple has sold over 120 million iPads to date and with the vast selection of apps and games available for the device, it makes sense that Apple would eventually offer a larger capacity.
The 128GB version of the iPad 4 will be available starting next Tuesday, February 5th and will come in Black and White. The Wi-Fi only version will cost $799, while the Wi-Fi + cellular version will cost $929, and both will be available through Apple’s online stores, retail stores and partners.
With the introduction of the 128GB storage it looks like Apple is the first to cross the storage boundary in its class. While we do understand that you can never have enough storage for your digital content, we cant help but wonder if this much storage is really a requirement for mobile devices.
However the Apple iPad still remains the dominant offering in the market and it makes sense that Apple continues to offer bigger and better things to keep their customers interested. Still it was surprising that Apple chose to release a new storage option before announcing a new device iteration.
With Google recently phasing off their 8GB Nexus 7 tablet, we can probably expect Apple eventually dropping their 8GB iPhone. I expect that this early step is a clear indication that Apple is just readying the 128GB category to make its way into all their Apple products.
