Windows Phone 7.8 will be released in early 2013 confirms Microsoft

Despite previous reports of the Windows Phone 7.8 update being released today for Windows Phone 7.5 devices, Microsoft has confirmed that the update will not be ready for roll out until early 2013. This was revealed on Microsoft's official blog by corporate vice president Terry Myerson,  who stated that Microsoft was currently working closely with hardware and carriers partners to test, approve and distribute the update by early next year.

Reports of the update being released on November 28th were sparked when videos demonstrating Windows Phone 7.8 running on a Nokia Lumia 510, which suggested that the update could be in its final stages of testing. Users of devices like the Nokia Lumia 900 and Nokia Lumia 800 will have to wait a little longer before they have access to the update.

The Windows Phone 7.8 update is an attempt from Microsoft to make up for not updating Windows Phone 7.5 users to Windows Phone 8, despite releasing the newer platform just months after a vigorous campaign to sell devices like the Lumia 900. Users were not made aware that their new devices would become obsolete so quickly and deny them access to the newer apps and features.

Windows Phone 7.8 attempts to make up for this by bringing the WP8 start screen experience along with 10 new theme and accent colors, Bing Picture of the Day on the lock screen, security updates and new apps. However it doesn’t offer some basic necessities like the ability to connect and sync with the Windows Phone synching tool or access to Xbox Music.

However as it looks like Microsoft will continue to release WP 7.8 hardware in the coming months aimed at suiting everyone’s budget, we have hope that they will change their stance on some of these features.
