How does Qi wireless charging on the Nokia Lumia 920 work

One of the interesting features on the new Nokia Lumia 920 is its integrated wireless charging. Nokia has joining HTC, Sony, Samsung and others to adopt the Qi proprietary charging interface created by Wireless Power Consortium.

Qi, which is pronounced “chee”, comes from the Chinese symbol which meaning energy flow.

Qi designed to provide energy to devices through magnetic induction. This works by an induction coil in the charging plate creating an alternating electromagnetic field which is picked up by a similar coil within the device which converts the energy to current.

Wireless charging does away with annoying cables which tend to get frayed or lost over time. With the Nokia Lumia 920 and the Nokia Lumia 820 featuring this innovative fun feature which we hope will be adopted by other manufactures in the coming years. With Virgin Atlantic and US coffee franchise Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf will be supplying charging stations for public use, these are all positive signs of momentum behind the standard.
