BlackBerry Jam Americas Event

RIM's BlackBerry Jam Americas conference is set to start today in San Jose California. The purpose of this developer conference is to build up some developer interest in their upcoming BlackBerry 10 (BB10) platform, which is expected to arrive in the consumer market by the first quarter of 2013.

RIM has managed to secure support from some of the big names like Facebook, Twitter, Foursquare and LinkedIn in the form of official apps, which will be available through the App World store for BlackBerry 10.

Foursquare has even endorsed the BB10 platform by stating how easy it is to develop for it. The Foursquare app for BB10 offers a true native experience, making use of the cards and sliding panels which are a core part of the BB10 experience.

Facebook on the other hand chose to offer a similar experience to iOS and Android with their app. While the Facebook app may not look like a native BB10 app, the consistent experience across platforms is not necessarily a bad thing. While the Twitter and LinkedIn apps weren't demonstrated, the BlackBerry hub showed its unified messaging abilities which hopes to combine Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn with BBM.

These are not the only developers who will be backing BB10. Games like Hexage, Radiant Defense and Bard's Tale were seen in the store. Apps like Box.net, Slacker Radio and the Pacemaker music apps which are available for the BlackBerry Playbook will also be available for the BB10 platform.

While RIM has stated that they have over 100,000 titles in the App World store, not all of them are optimized for full screen devices. RIM will have to continue their work to get these apps updated for their new platform as soon as possible. In fact RIM has announced that they will start accepting app submission for BlackBerry 10 on October 10th.

The BlackBerry App World will also get some additions like music and video downloads, giving its users the same experience offered by its competitors. Users will be able to use their BlackBerry ID to choose and purchase the items they want through the store.

While BlackBerry 10 is a smooth and refined operating system, experience has shown that its the apps that either make or break an operating system's popularity. While it is important for RIM to get big developer names behind them, the developer community as  a whole will have to embrace the BB10 platform to ensure its success. With the BB10 launch months away, we hope that RIM continues its efforts to get developer support.

The BlackBerry Jam Americas event is set to end on the 27th, so stay tuned for further updates on our BlackBerry Blog.
