[Guide] How to install a custom ROM on your Android device


Android users have the option to install custom ROMs instead of the default ROM which is shipped with the device. You will have to first root your device before you are able to install custom ROMs

In Android devices the ROM (Read Only Memory) is where the operating system (OS) is located. Since Android is an open source OS, developers release customized operating systems for your device which are known as custom ROMs and you can change the style, theme and organization of the way your device works.

The guide to install a custom ROM on your Android device follows.

  1. Before you get started it is a good idea to download and install the Android SDK. While some rooting guides and tools will come with the files required from the SDK to root your device we feel having the latest SDK installed on your computer is always the best method.

  3. Download and install an application like Titanium Backup from the Android Market.

  4. Download and install the ROM Manager app from the Android Market

  5. If you use ROM Manager to download your custom ROM it will automatically ask you if you want to perform a backup or not. 
  6. Open ROM Manager and select Flash ClockworkMod Recovery from the menu.
    • By running this you ensure that your current ROM is backed up and you can recover if something goes wrong
    • If something goes wrong simply reboot into recovery mode and recover your old ROM.

  7. You can either select
    • Download ROM or
    • Install ROM from your SD Card from the options on ROM Manager.

  8. The CynogenMod is one of the fan favorites if you are looking for something to try.

  9. When you are installing your ROM
    • Select Backup Existing ROM and
    • Select Wipe Data and Cache and
    • Click Ok.

Let the installation complete and reboot, and you will have your brand new ROM installed.
