The iPhone is getting ready for a new major update, namely iPhone OS 4.0. The new iteration of the OS claims more than 100 new features for the iPhone and the iPod and is due to ship this summer (end June). OS 4 will be made available for the iPad in the fall of 2010
The second beta has currently been disbursed to the developer community with the SDK offering many new APIs ensuring exciting new features in the upcoming apps.
Probably the most welcome of the features is multitasking. The iPhone's competition has had multi tasking for years, and apple has kept it out of their OS until now. Multi tasking can be started by double clicking the home button on the iPhone. The downside is that multi tasking is limited to audio streaming, VoIP and GPS apps, allowing a few additional features.
The folder’s feature allows you to have 2160 apps on your iPhone now instead of the 180 app limit of before. The folders can even be moved into the dock. The e-Mail app has been enhanced with a universal inbox, which allows you to quickly move between your mailboxes.
iBooks from the iPad has also been introduced in the new OS, allowing users to read their iBooks on both the iPad and their iPhones/iPods.
iPad users will have to wait for a few more months before they can get their hands on the new OS and its features, i guess they don't deserve much sympathy since they have been treated to OS 3.2 for long enough now.
