Apple schedules event on October 16, likely iPad Air successor unveiling

Apple has announced that it has scheduled a press event next week, on October 16, at its campus in Cupertino. The company did not unveil what it plans to announce during the event and simply had the words "it's been way too long" accompanying the invite. During the event, the company is expected to unveil a new generation of tablets along with the successor to the Apple iPad Air.

The upcoming iPad will likely be called the iPad Air 2 and is expected to be unveiled alongside a new iPad mini. Apple may also take the opportunity to unveil some Macs and we may also see a new iPod Touch to accompany the larger iPhones.

The iPad Air 2 is expected to feature Apple's TouchID fingerprint scanners, but it is not known if Apple Pay will be included in the tablets. Other features include Apple's new A8 processor, an 8MP rear camera and as much as 2GB of RAM. Rumors also suggest that Apple may replace the 16GB version of tablet with a 32GB model and make the tablets available in silver, grey and gold colors.
