Apple iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus receive record pre-orders

Apple iPhone 6 vs. Apple iPhone 6 Plus

Apple set a new record for first day iPhone pre-orders on Friday, as the company made the Apple iPhone 6 and the Apple iPhone 6 Plus available to its customers. Pre-orders were accepted starting at 3am Eastern Time on Friday morning.

Demand was so heavy, that the Apple online store, and certain carriers' online stores, suffered from technical difficulties. In some regions, the site was not working. 90 minutes later, Apple was still having issues in certain countries. Some current iOS users were able to reserve their iPhone 6 by using the Apple Store app from the Apple App Store. Customers of T-Mobile and Sprint also had troubles reserving the new models early Friday.

The Apple iPhone 6 Plus is currently on backorder, with shipments to resume in three to four weeks. For most of the day, all versions of the iPhone 6 were available with shipping to take place on the phone's regular launch date of September 19th. Now, however, Apple's website shows the 64GB and 128GB versions of the iPhone 6 shipping in 7 to 10 business days.

Getting in touch with Apple was also difficult on Friday. The Apple text-chat support went down this afternoon, and those calling for a representative were stuck listening to a taped message telling them that calls to the company were higher than normal.

The iPhone 6 features a 4.7 inch display with a 750 x 1334 pixel resolution while the iPhone 6 Plus comes with a 5.5 inch display and a 1080 x 1920 pixel resolution. Most of the other specifications are identical, with up to 128GB of storage, an 8MP iSight camera, a new front facing FaceTime HD camera, NFC connectivity for Apple Pay and an Apple A8 processor with an M8 coprocessor. The rear camera on the iPhone 6 Plus has the added benefit of optical image stabilization (OIS) which should result in better low-light photos.
