Google Hangouts for iOS has been updated to
version 1.3.0 and adds the ability to make
free calls in the U.S. and Canada along with other features and improvements. Hangouts will use your Google Voice number for outgoing calls and incoming calls to that number can be answered from your Hangouts app. This feature is unfortunately still not available on Android, and will likely be introduced with
Android 4.4 KitKat. Google Hangouts for iOS is a cross platform messaging application which lets you communicate across iOS, Android and even desktop systems.

Hangouts for iOS version 1.3.0 has the following features and improvements:
- See which of your friends is using Hangouts, and who can be reached right now
- Call phone numbers from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch (free to the US and Canada)
- Make and receive calls using your Google Voice number
- Send and receive animated GIFs that play inline
- Hangouts will temporarily turn down your music (instead of stopping it) when you receive an incoming message
