Sony SmartWatch 2 showcased, coming later in September for €179

The Sony SmartWatch 2 was first unveiled back in June, and reintroduced during yesterday's press conference at the IFA 2013. However the Samsung Gear unveiling seems to have boosted Sony's need to showcase their own Android smartwatch one more time, and they have even included the information that it will be released in late September with a €179 pricing.

The SmartWatch 2 is the sequel to last year's Sony SmartWatch. The new model has a 1.6 inch touch display with a 220 by 176 pixel resolution. The display is also transflective, which should allow much better battery life. There are no speakers, microphone or camera like the Galaxy Gear, but the lack of these features should contribute toward a better battery life, which Sony claims can be between 3 to 4 days. Much like most of Sony's recent hardware, the SmartWatch 2 includes IP57 certification for water resistance.

Sony has really improved the overall performance of the device along with the interface, but the SmartWatch still lacks a selection of 3rd party apps. While Sony has been working hard to promote the SmartWatch to developers, it is hard to gain much use out of this device, other than using it as a second screen for your smartphone or tablet.

Sony hasn't revealed U.S. pricing or availability, but the SmartWatch 2 is planned for a European release in late September. The standard black silicone strap model will cost €179 (~$236); the stainless steel strap model will be €199 (~$263); and, each of the color silicone straps will be priced at €19 (~$25). The SmartWatch 2 is also listed on Amazon UK for £159.99 (~$250) with a shipping date of September 13th.
