Today Google took the wraps off a brand new Nexus 7 tablet during a special Chrome/Android event today. The handset is the first device to officially run Android 4.3 Jelly Bean which was also announced during the event. The device features a 7 inch touch display like the original Nexus 7, but has an improved 1920 by 1200 pixel resolution which results in the base model being bumped up to $230, compared to the $199 pricing of the original.The display has a 320 ppi pixel density, which is 50% more than the first Nexus 7 and higher than the Nexus 10. Along with being the highest resolution on a 7 inch tablet, the device also offers 30% wider color gamut.
In terms of processing power, Google has chosen a Snapdragon S4 Pro with quad-core Krait processor which is clocked at 1.5GHz compared to the Tegra 3 processor on the original. The RAM has also been upped to 2GB compared to the 1GB on the older model.
Even though the display size is still the same, the Nexus 7 is smaller. Google and Asus have 1.8mm off the thickness and 2.8mm of the bezels on either sides. The weight has also been reduced by 50 grams.
The new Nexus 7 adds a 5 megapixel camera which is capable of 1080p HD video capture alongside the 1.2 megapixel front facing camera. Other changes include an LED notification light on the front and a SlimPort microUSB port which can be used as a HD video out. You also have dual-band Wi-Fi a/b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0, NFC, wireless charging and optional 4G LTE connectivity.
The LTE model is fully unlocked and can use it on AT&T, T-Mobile or Verizon.
In terms of storage you can choose between the 16GB and 32GB models. The 16GB base model costs $230 while the 32GB model will cost you $270. The 4G LTE model costs $350 and is only available with 32GB of storage on board.
The new Nexus 7 will be available in the United States starting July 30 through the Google Play store and a number of retailers including Best Buy, GameStop, Walmart, Staples and Amazon.
Google will expand availability for the new Nexus 7 to Canada, the UK, Germany, France, Spain, Australia, Japan and South Korea in the coming weeks.
