It was recently confirmed by multiple sources that Windows Blue (as it was internally named) will be called Windows 8.1 instead of Windows 9. Even though Windows 8 has only been around for a short time, Microsoft has been hard at work on their next version of Windows.
Windows 8.1 will be an incremental update to Windows 8, which means it wont stray too far from what we have from Windows 8 right now.
The update was further confirmed though a leaked screenshot which shows the new version of Windows with the Windows 8.1 Pro label.
This also backs up previous claims by Microsoft officials, who said that Windows 8 will be more than one release, with more versions of the operating system coming under the Windows 8 brand. Microsoft has done the same with Windows Phone 7 with several smaller iterations including Windows Phone 7.5 (aka Mango) being released before Windows Phone 8.
The first developer preview of Windows 8.1 is expected to be released in June during Microsoft’s BUILD conference, while the update is expected to be released to manufacturers by August.
Since Windows 8.1 (Blue) is expected to bring support for smaller screen resolutions, we will likely see the first Windows competitor to the Amazon Kindle Fire, Google Nexus 7 and Apple iPad mini arrive in time for the 2013 holiday season.
