Samsung announces Galaxy Mega 6.3 and Galaxy Mega 5.8
Samsung has announced two new smartphones which belong to the 'phablet' family, the Samsung Galaxy Mega 6.3 and the Samsung Galaxy Mega 5.8. These two handsets borrow some of the features of the Samsung Galaxy S IV flagship but aim to reach out to the mid-range segment as a more affordable alternative to the high end Galaxy Note.
The Samsung Galaxy Mega 6.3 features a 6.3 inch touch display with a 720 by 1280 pixel resolution, up to 16GB of internal storage which can be expanded through microSD, an 8 megapixel camera, a secondary 1.9 megapixel camera for video calls, optional 4G LTE connectivity, NFC, Wi-Fi a/b/g/n/ac, an IR emitter which works as a remote control and is powered by a 1.7 GHz dual-core Exynos 5250 processor with 1.5 GB of RAM.
The Galaxy Mega 6.3 has a generous 3200 mAh which will offer you over a day of battery life but weighs in at 199 grams which is reasonable considering the monstrous size of this device.
Meanwhile the Samsung Galaxy Mega 5.8 features a 5.8 inch touch display with a 540 by 960 pixel resolution, 8GB of internal storage which can be expanded through microSD, an 8 megapixel camera capable of 1080p HD video capture, an 1.9 megapixel camera for video calls and is powered by a 1.4 GHz dual-core processor with 1.5 GB of RAM.
Samsung has decided to exclude the 4G connectivity, Wi-Fi 802.11ac, NFC and IR emitter with this handset which will hopefully result in a cheaper price. The handset has a 2600 mAh battery and weighs in at 182 grams. The Mega 5.8 will also feature a dual-SIM variant for those who need one.
Both Mega handsets run Android 4.2 Jelly Bean with Samsung TouchWiz modifications like Multi-view (split-screen multitasking) and Air View (detecting your finger an inch from the screen). Unfortunately Samsung has decided not to include the S Pen with either device.
You can also connect both the Mega handsets to your Galaxy S IV through Group Play. Both handsets are expected to be available worldwide with the roll-out starting in Europe and Russia in May. Samsung has unfortunately not revealed the pricing of these tablets at this time.
