The Evolution of the Windows logo

We released a report a couple of days ago showing the newly designed Windows 8 logo. Microsoft has now made it official in an announcement which showcased the evolution of the Windows logo since Windows 1.0.

Over the years, the representation of the the operating system became the quad-colored waving flag we have grown accustomed to. With Windows 8 Microsoft has gone back to their roots, bringing back the essence of what the logo represents - A Window.

Windows 1.0 - This is not a logo that many will be familiar with. But looking at this past portrayal, it is clear that the designers of the current logo have been heavily inspired by it's design.

Windows 3.1 - This is a logo most of us will be familiar with and became quite iconic in the years to come. The four colours would be symbolic to Windows and the waving effect would give the logo a sense of motion.

Windows XP - This was the next big stage in the evolution of the Windows logo which would go on to be referred to as the 'Windows flag'.

Windows Vista - Vista was a major leap in design from Windows XP with the introduction of the Aero UI. The blue Windows orb, which was referred to as the 'pearl' in the Microsoft offices once again became iconic for Windows and can still be seen in Windows branded hardware even though Windows 7 has long since taken over as the dominant Windows OS.

Windows 8 - And that brings us to the Windows 8 logo. Microsoft states that they kept the following goals in mind in their design

  • A design which was both modern and classic
  • Influenced by the Metro UI, principle of being Authentically Digital.
  • Dynamic, to suit the personality of it's user.
