Messages as a free download for testing. The Messages app for OS X which is currently in beta can be downloaded from Apple and allows you to send unlimited free messages to anyone with a supported iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad or Mac.

Apple continues to break the boundaries between their iOS and Mac devices, and we can only imagine that they have a similar goal to Microsoft in unifying their operating systems sometime down the line.
The Messages app is a much anticipated to iChat. Just like iMessage on your iOS device you can send unlimited messages to anyone using a Mac or another iOS device running iOS 5. You can send photos videos, documents or contacts and even send messages to a group. You can see when your messages are delivered or when someone is typing a reply. By turning on read receipts, you can see when your message has been read.
